| The Cobras have completed their Hellenic Cup program with mixed results but with plenty to work with in 2010 as a number of players displayed a high level of commitment and talent. The first match against Harrisfield Hurricanes will be remembered for the awesome display by Andrew Iliopoulos as he destroyed a more experienced side with his blistering hatrick in the 4-1 win. A number of players also shone on the day as one of our younger brigades, George Niaros, was very busy in the middle of the park and certainly one of the future stars while Nick Talidis scored his first goal upfront and Ado Dedovic was brilliant in his role as the sweeper. Alex our young keeper also displayed plenty of skill and can certainly make the jump to playing Thirds or Reserves this year. The second match against Southern Suburbs was controversial as the side matched it against a fitter opponent and scored a great opening goal on the counter attack. The two youngsters, George Niaros and Dimitri Siarkis combined to split the hapless Suburbs defence and a brilliant one two enabled Dimitri to score his first goal at a senior level. The match descended to terrible officiating as Suburbs equalised when all were convinced of an offside position and another terrible decision was when they scored their second after the veteran, Greg Thomaidis, jumped to header the ball but was judged to have pushed his much taller opponent and a penalty was awarded. The side did not give up and matters were made worse when John Tselekidis was red carded for advising the referee that he needs to protect the 16s year olds as reckless tackles were not punished. The side also lost Matheus to an ankle injury and were gallant playing with 9 men and eventually lost 1-3. The last match against a star studded Premier League outfit, Bentleigh Greens, ended as expected with a 0-4 loss but the major plus was the brilliant display by Arthur Mamalis in defence who beat his opponent, while Dimitri Siarkis also held his own on the wing and Nick Talidis came on and created a few headaches and could have scored with a couple of chances. Overall a successful hit out for a team of new players, reserves and four of winning Under 16s side from 2009. |
