| The Cobras have played two practice matches with a 4-3 win over Traralgon last weekend and a 0-0 stalemate vs Old Camberwell on Saturday. The side travelled to Traralgon on the long weekend which is becoming an annual tradition in visiting rural clubs during the pre season. The games were eagerly anticipated as the Cobras rocked up to a magnificent playing arena at Traralgon Olympians. The Reserves match started under the darkening clouds rapidly coming towards Traralgon from Melbourne. The message was already relayed that we will be pelted by hail and rain in a ferocious storm that hit Melbourne. Within 12 minutes the match was called off as the safety of players was a concern and everyone was amazed at the power of nature. During those 12 minutes the Cobras were dominant and scored two goals. The first goal was scored by Denis Khassapov after a brilliant ball by John Tselekidis while Peter Antonoulis continued his scoring run by adding the second. The heavens opened up shortly after and players were scrambling to safety. The senior game was not expected to be played but the ground demonstrated its drainage capabilities and it took around 30 minutes to clear the water laden pitch. Amazing. The match was played at a high level with Traralgon sprinkled with a few ex NSL stars but it was the Cobras who gained the upper hand and raced to a 4-1 lead with 5 minutes remaining and two keeping bloopers enabled Traralgon to score an additional 2 goals with the match ending for 1 4-3 win to the Cobras. Goals were scored by Peter Alissaphos with two while Luke Thompson and Steve Tsiantoulas scored the others. Overall a good performance by the club and a great trip with Traralgon Olympians the perfect host with their facilities and after the match dinner. On Saturday the team played Old Camberwell at the Lemnian Community Centre on a lush pitch and the Reserves were given a wake up call with a 1-4 loss with Ari Mamalis scoring a consolation goal at the end of the match while the Senior team had plenty of opportunities but failed to convert. Both grades played with a number of players missing and the positive sign out of the matches is that the club in 2010 will certainly have depth. On Saturday 20 March the side is travelling to Hoppers Crossing, Grange Reserve, Hogans Rd, Hoppers Crossing for another practice match. On the same night the Cobras is hosting an 80s night at the Caulfield Park Pavilion, Balaclava Rd, Caulfield starting at 7:30pm. All players and their partners and club members are welcome. |
