| The Cobras resurgence is continuing as Saturday's win make it 3 in a row in what was a ding dong battle against Bayside Argonauts. The Reserves also played very well in their stirring 2-1 victory and move to 2nd spot. The players at Cobraland have regained the belief that they are a very competitive unit and once again this was demonstrated on Saturday in a bruising encounter with Bayside. The start of the match was tentative as both sides flexed their muscles and tested their defences. Bayside was utilising their attacking right back very well and their strong forward was making darting runs into the defensive third. The ex Cobra man, Peter Roussos was making a nuisance of himself as a target man but Narada Guzman got the better of him as the match progressed and thwarted his aerial dominance. The hard working defence led by Chris Balkos was holding out as the team started to worry Bayside with counter attacking football. Chances were few in the first half but the second half was a delight to watch as both teams turned on the after burners and produced end to end football. A brilliant reflex save by Declan Frey denied the Argonauts the opener while the post denied the Cobras with an early goal. Peter Alissaphos was worrying the defence and once he broke the shackles he dominated play and scored a brilliant goal on the run and in the end could have scored another two as he tore the Argonauts defence apart. The Argonauts also had a couple of chances as their No 10 had two great strikes just over the bar. In the end the Cobras held out in a terrific game and moved another couple of rungs on the ladder to 7th spot. The 14 players were brilliant in a team effort and the rebuilding of the club continues. This Saturday the team faces Old Carey away from home. The Reserves displayed their brilliant defensive game and in the end were exhausted against a team who were unbeaten in 6 matches. The first 15 minutes it was a German style of football as counter attacking flair was on show as the Cobras scored 2 goals. The first goal was after a well taken corner as Ari Mamalis clever run away from goal enabled Ari Papaioannou to score the opener. Within 5 minutes Chris Priftis scored another and the Cobras were dominating and their opponents shell shocked. Though at the 20th minute mark a goal keeping howler by Vamvoukos provided the Argonauts a lifeline and they started to dominate play as the Cobras were still reeling after the mistake. With 10 minutes remaining in the half, Ben Rigby found himself with space and his great strike just missed. The second half was a great spectacle of brilliant defensive work and catching their opponents on the break. For a very attacking team it was a change of tactics that blanketed the Argonauts' skill on the ball. Arthur Mamalis ran himself to the ground in an excellent performance in midfield while Greg Thomaidis was one again dominant in the centre. Ari Hrambanis blanketed the dangerous right winger while Steve Merenda has continued his great form in the sweeper role. Ari Mamalis is only getting better and better and knocking on the door of senior selection. The captain Ari Papaioannou led the example of running to contests and laying the tough tackles. The combination of Archie and Andrew Sirianos held the forwards very well. Up front, Denis Khassapov is performing brilliantly as his hard running at the ball is to be commended warranting a senior call up. Chris Priftis will only get better as he is coming back from injury and was at the right place to score the second. Fantastic victory and the team moved to 2nd spot on the ladder. The Thirds and Masters had a bye this weekend but back into competitive mode the coming weekend as the Thirds are playing 4th placed Ashburton at home at 11am while the Masters are playing Brighton at 11am on Oval No 2 at Victory Park |
