The Cobras juggernaut continues with 3-1 win over Old Carey
It has been a mighty four week period as the Cobras came from behind and beat Old Carey to move to 5th spot. The Reserves have been hindered by injuries and unavailability of players and lost 0-1 while the Thirds recorded their 6th straight win. The Masters also lost 0-1 to Brighton.

It was the Senior team that was the toast of the town on Saturday as it outplayed Old Carey in the second half and racked up 3 goals within 10 minutes. The team is playing with confidence and renewed belief that their season is truly alive. A huge test this Saturday as the Cobras face 3rd placed Skye Utd at Victory Park in what is the game of the round.

The team was once again reshuffled as top goalscorer, Peter Alissaphos, Luke Thompson and John Tselekidis were away interstate and the side struggled in the first half with the small pitch even when Old Carey lost a man to a red card at the 25th minute mark. Mid way in the half, Chris Balkos made a telling save as he threw himself at a goal bound shot and cleared the ball of the line in what was one example of a brilliant display by the captain for 90 minutes. Old Carey soon were in front as their striker scored from a tight angle. The hosts were not affected by the red card and played a very tight defensive game for the remainder of the half.

Fred Demetriou gave the players a spray at half time and this certainly fired them up. A tactical change had Narada Guzman substituted as the dangerous replacement Denis Khassapov had 45 minutes to make an impact. The Cobras were on fire as Old Carey were pegged in their own half content to protect their one goal lead. The Cobras faithful started to wonder whether the team will score as shots on goal hit the woodwork 3 times. Though in the 55th minute the equaliser was finally scored as John Tzifrakos was on hand to slot the first goal. In the 60th minute a brilliantly taken free kick by Onur Tufan gave the Cobras the lead while the hard running Denis Khassapov scored the third and his first goal at senior level. It was a frenetic 15 minute period that displayed brilliant passing and hunger to ensure another victory.

Old Carey did not roll over and caused a few scares in the last 10 minutes but the Cobras did enough to ensure their 4th win on the trot and a dream start to Fred's coaching stint. Steve Tsiantoulas, Prassinos and Velaoras ran all day while Tufan was exhausted at the end with his gut busting runs. Victor Patsias played with a corked knee and was getting better and better as the game went on as his runs down the left flank were a treat. It was pleasing to see Rob Pittito come on a substitute and stamp his quality by controlling the midfield while Ari Mamalis made his debut and was on hand with some quality interceptions and clearances. Though it was the Balkos who led the team off the park to a rowdy reception by the faithful and his game typified the new found life of this proud club.

The Reserves team lost a couple of players to the senior squad and Ari Papaioannou and Giore Lichtenstein were on holidays while the return of Andrew Iliopoulos bolstered the team's attacking stocks. The team started brightly as Tim Akhounov was on fire and Camargo and Iliopoulos were creating headaches for the flat four Old Carey defence. Iliopoulos was back to his brilliant best after a long layoff due to injury and should have scored a hatrick as he was in a goalscoring situation at least 5 times during the half. Disaster struck in the 40th minute as he reinjured his hamstring and was replaced by Peter Petros. Old Carey had the only opportunity in the half in the last minute as their striker should have converted from only 10 meters out. The scores were deadlocked at the break 0-0.

The wind was causing havoc all day and the Cobras failed to take advantage of the strong breeze in the second half and were outplayed by their hosts. They opened the score in the 60th minute and never looked back as they defended in numbers while looking dangerous on the counterattack while the Cobras lost Ari Hrambanis to another groin injury. Goerge Vamvoukos pulled off a couple of fine saves while the likes of Camargo, Akhounov, Petros and in the end Arabatsis had chances to equalise but all failed to trouble the scoresheet. In the end it was a deserving win to Old Carey while the positives for the Cobras was the blooding of a couple of youngsters in Peter Petros and Anthony Sakeslidis who both showed plenty of promise.

The Thirds are marching on and secure third spot on the ladder as they beat Ashburton 3-0 with Dedovic, Arthur Mamalis and Nicou all scoring. They face the 2nd placed Beaumaris on Sunday at Beaumaris Reserve, Reserve Rd, Beaumaris at 11am.

The Masters are getting closer to securing their first point as they lost 0-1 to Brighton after a dubious penalty was awarded and converted by Brighton. They have a bye next weekend and time off to freshen the tiring legs and aching muscles.
